Apartments

Along the Costa Daurada there are possibilities for renting apartments although these are harder to come by in the winter months. You may be able to arrange package-type holiday deals with your travel agent. Alternatively, if you search through the travel sections of newspapers, you will be able to find telephone numbers to arrange such accommodation yourself. The two main destinations for holidaying Brits are Salou and Cambrils. You will be able to get information on these from one of the tourist offices listed above.

FONDA CAL BLASI

Situated in the historical centre of Montblanc, Fonda Cal Blasi is a delightful guest house constructed from a 12th century building. The antique structure of the building has been preserved whilst the Catalunyan concept of a "fonda" (a small family hotel serving home-made food) has been updated to give maximum comfort for our guests.

All of our rooms have heating and air-conditioning, TV, telephone and a hairdryer as well as a modern and complete bathroom.
Some of our rooms have a lovely balcony with deck-chairs for enjoying the evening sun.

The house has a restaurant serving good traditional food, a living room with a library, TV and DVD player and we also have a laundry service.

We also have WIFI access and a computer.

We are a very convenient base for all of the superb rock climbing in the Sierra de Prades and the Costa Daurada.

[Madrid For Ever (6c), Sector Xina at La Riba, Costa Daurada., 4 kb]Refugios

You could quite happily base yourself at any one of the refugios in the Sierra de Prades. Each one is different in character and offers different facilities. It is a good way to meet other climbers and each refugio holds a route book. If you are planning to stay at a refugio you will need to bring all your own equipment including stoves, plates, cutlery, sleeping bags etc.

La Mussara - Set in a lovely surrounding with great views down to the coast 1000m below. You can either camp here for 350pts a night, which includes use of the refugio facilities, or you can sleep in the refugio for 600pts a night. You can buy meals, beer, drinks and sometimes chalk. The refugio guardians speak a little English but try your best to speak some Spanish. It can get busy at the weekends with people from the cities.

Mont-ral - Situated in the small village of Mont-ral, this refugio is more like a hostel. It has no camping facilities, only dormitory-type accommodation. The guardians provide meals, drinks and beer. There is a telephone at the refugio.

Arboli - Based in the village of Arboli, this refugio is a pleasant one with a laid-back atmosphere. Again there are no camping facilities just dormitory-type accommodation.

Siurana - This refugio has its own atmosphere and scene. Dormitory accommodation is available along with meals and drinks. A party-piece bouldering wall hangs above the eating tables, perfect when you've had a few beers, but not when you want a bit of sleep.

The refuge at Cogullons has now closed although free camping is still possible. There is also a refuge in the village of Margalef although it is only open at very busy times.

Camping Sites

[Espero (6b+) Sector Can Simiro, Arboli, Costa Daurada., 5 kb]

There are numerous campsites to be found in both the Prades and Montsant region, as well as along the coast. They fall into two catagories. The free ones without much in the way of facilities and the expensive ones (5 quid per night) with fantastic facilities with everything from swimming pools to restaurants. Being based at one of the sites listed below will mean that you are conveniently located for the climbing. If you are camping for free somewhere it is possible to pay for a shower at the Prades campsite. You need to bring all your own equipment.

Camping Prades - Prades - A full-facility site situated in the small town of Prades which is smack bang in the centre of the climbing. The site is a popular weekend retreat for the city folk of Tarragona and Reus and can get very busy. Facilities include hot showers, washing machines, shop, telephones, restaurant/bar. There are also some bungalows for rent. The town of Prades contains a bakery, grocery, shops, bars, restaurants, bank etc. all within walking distance of the campsite. It is worth being aware that Prades is at an altitude of about 1000m and, because of its location right in the centre of the Prades mountains, it does tend to catch cold and damp weather in the winter months, but you can soon drive out of this on your way to one of the climbing areas.

Camping La Ruta del Cister - Vilanova de Prades - Not to be confused with the town of Prades, Vilanova de Not to be confused with the town of Prades, Vilanova de Prades is a small village 8km from Prades. It is well situated for all the climbing areas especially Vilanova de Prades. You can almost stumble out of your tent and be on the crag. As well as camping, this full-facility site also has small chalet/bungalows for rent which can accommodate up to 8 people. Again the site has all facilities such as hot showers, washing machines, games room, bar, shop, play area. A route book of the Vilanova de Prades climbing is kept in the bar. Tel/Fax: +34 (9)77 86 90 50
www.svt.es/serraprades E-mail: serraprades@svt.es.

Camping Montsant Park - Ulldemolins - Another good site situated between Cornudella and Vilanova de Prades on the C242, near to the town of Ulldemolins. Tel: +34 (9)77 56 17 08

La Mussara Refugio - There are some very nice camping spots amongst the pine trees surrounding the Mussara refuge and you can use all the facilities of the refuge (bring your own stove etc) or you can buy meals and beer from the guardians.

[Pa d'agla (7b) Can Simiro, Arboli in the Costa Daurada, 3 kb]Siurana - There is a new campsite at Siurana located 200 metres before the large parking area before the village. Run by Toni Arbones, it has good showers and washrooms. There may now be some apartments for the winter. There is also a clubhouse that serves drinks and food. Topos and new route information are held there and Toni sells 5.10 climbing shoes and chalk.
Camping Siurana, Coll de Ginebre, 43362 Siurana, Tarragona.

The Coast - There are campsites along the coast which are not as conveniently located for the climbing, but are well situated if you will be spending some time enjoying the beach. It is much warmer on the coast in the winter months and many of the sites are open throughout the ‘off season’ months.

Free Camping

There are several possibilities for free camping for those on a tight budget. As usual you will have to sacrifice certain things like easily available water, proper toilets and security for your belongings, but you will be able to get close to the climbing and usually be in a very beautiful situation. If you are camping for free somewhere it is possible to pay for a shower at the Prades campsite. The popular sites are on the approach to La Riba and up the Cogullons under the old refuge (no problem with security there).
