Getting Around
![[The huge arete of Delivertoad (E6 6b) in Gordale, Yorkshire Limestone, 7 kb]](/images/t/724.jpg) The easiest way to get to most of the bouldering areas in this book is by car and the approach descriptions are written assuming you have access to a car or bicycle. However many of them do lie along transport corridors which are well served by bus and rail services. Timetables for both bus and train services in the northern areas covered in the guide are given in the booklet Getting around in the Yorkshire Dales free from Tourist Information Centres and by post from Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Grassington, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 5LB.
For bus and train times in the West Yorkshire area ring Metroline - 0113 245 7676
Trains
There are three main rail lines which will be of use to reach most of the crags between Leeds and Ilkley, the trans pennine line which runs from Leeds/Bradford through Halifax, Hebdun Bridge and Todmorden and north from Leeds/Bradford through the Keighley Valley to Skipton.

Pubs
Yorkshire, as any serious beer drinker will know, is home to some of the finest beer in the World! It is also stuffed full of pubs, in fact Otley reputedly has the most pubs per square mile of any town in the country. The pubs listed below are just a few worthy of a visit, there are plenty more:
The Elm Tree - Embsay, Elm Tree Square. Nice food and beer, handy for Crookrise and the nearby steam railway. The Bar Tat - Ilkley, Cunliffe Road, behind Betty's Tea rooms. Converted old shop with nice beer and small but interesting menu. The Black Sheep Brewery - Masham. Visitor's centre and bistro with gift shop, tour of the brewery next door. The Junction - Otley, 44 Bondgate. A nice pub, an Ex-CAMRA pub of the year. Friendly with a nice selection of ales. Often has acoustic music. Bowling Green - Otley. Near bus station. Daft bric-a-brac and nice beer from nearby brewery Fanny's Ale and Cider House - Shipley, 63 Saltaire Road. Nice gas lit atmosphere, good beers. Near the historic village of Saltaire. Knaresborough - If you fancy a carry out try the excellent Beer Ritz Off License in the town square which has a massive selection of beers from all over the world. The Red Lion - Burnsall. Good food and beer but doesn't sell crisps and nuts. The Devonshire Hotel - Grassington. Good food with some offers during the week. The Old Hall Inn - Threshfield. Convenient on the way home with good food and beer. The Devonshire Arms - Cracoe. A convenient stop-off on the way back down south. The Tennant Arms - in Kilnsey village. Excellent food and Black Sheep beer. Kings Arms - in Kettlewell. Located round the back near the church. The Falcon - at Arncliffe. Handy for Blue Scar and Yew Cogar. They serve beer in a jug, don't serve lager and don't appreciate crowds, but it does have a unique atmosphere. The Listers Arms - in Malham village. A great pub with lots of guest ales. The Buck Inn - in Malham village. A top pint of Timmy Taylor's Landlord. The Golden Lion - Settle. Slightly unusual interior but with a good atmosphere. The Black Horse - in Giggleswick. Best kept secret in the Dales. A great pint of Landlord. The Harts Head - in Giggleswick. Has a good pint of Landlord. The Maypole - in Long Preston. On the A65 when going back down south from Settle. The Marton Arms - near Ingleton. Good food and wide choice of beers.
