It is easy in the Ariège to fall into a sport climbing mindset, but Le pilier sud, with around 1000m of vertical ascent from the valley floor, is much more Alpine style climbing. Recorded timings for the route are between six and a half hours and three days, with the J.D. Achard guide giving it 8 hours. Fast times require linking easier pitches, simul-climbing and good route finding. It is also a good candidate for a leisurely two day ascent with a comfortable bivi under the pine trees on pitch 13.
