GR.165117 700m NNW-facing Black Crag is on the north slope of Scoat Fell. The crag could be visited for a quick route during a circular walk taking in Kirkfell, Pillar, Scoat Fell, Red Pike and Yewbarrow. The crag sees very little winter sun as if faces NNW and is shielded by surrounding crags. It tends to hold the snow after many other winter crags have been stripped. Approach: The long Ennerdale approach is eased if mountain bikes are left (locked and hidden) at 161128 close to High Beck. You can go up via the forested hillside for a few hundred metres to the forestry road and bridge then go left along the road for 100m+ until a trail branches up and to the right. This will take you along a decent line up through the trees. A long walk from Buttermere , or not quite so long from Wasdale, are alternative options. Routes are described left to right.
