ALARÓ

The huge hulk of Alaró dominates the view towards the mountains when travelling along the road that crosses the interior of Mallorca. With so much rock it could almost be expected that this place would provide a destination on its own, yet around 15 years after the first developments, there are still only a handful of routes on three relatively limited sectors. Unfortunately, as is often the case on Mallorca, access difficulties have dogged Alaró for many years and put a halt on climbers being able to realise the full potential of the place - see below for the current situation. The consolation is that the small number of existing routes are mostly brilliant and on wonderful rock formations. Sector Chorreras offers massive pitches up immaculate tufa systems ranging from the pencil-thick to tree-trunk-like. The route Buf! is now world famous but virtually all the routes on this wall are as good. The other two sectors are not quite as spectacular but still have some major routes, including some easier ones on Paret de sa Porta, and some multi-pitch routes on Sector del Medio. Another pleasant aspect to a visit is the excellent restaurant on the approach road; there tends to be only one meal on the menu but it is guaranteed to be a good one, and the place has a great atmosphere.
