The Rjukan Centre area is a typical Norwegian valley; around the small village, there are steep hillsides that are covered with trees and of course peppered with quite a few waterfalls. Above it all is the beautiful mountain of Gaustatoppen which overlooks the area, rising to an altitude of 1883 metres. Climbing the waterfalls in this area offers uncomplicated (mostly) approaches and pleasant views. When you have finished your climb of choice, it is only short hike down to the pub and a spot of "apres-climb". These are conditions that tend to suit the modern ice climber very well!
