The original appeared back in 2004 and had 80 problems described. This new edition covers a much larger area and with over 250 problems included.

Ben comments:

“There has been a steady trickle of new problems during the 7 years following the first Boulderfield MiniGuide so this update is long overdue. New or previously neglected boulders have been opened in the familiar northern sector and a whole new sector in the south has been uncovered. These new additions are not just in fillers – some of the new problems are amongst the best in the boulderfield. In a refashioning of an old local joke there are now over 250 documented ways to stand up!”

Our first publication of 2012 is now available for online ordering and from outdoor retailers. The Beginners’ Guide for Climbers is a bit of a departure for us – an illustrated guide for young climbers produced in conjunction with NICAS (the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme). It is a beautiful little hardback book with some delightful illustrations by Sophie Mitchell.

The book covers all the skills required for NICAS stages 1, 2 and some of 3 and is fully endorsed by NICAS.

“The NICAS trustees are delighted to recommend this book with its innovative approach to introducing the basic skills of climbing. Sophie’s wonderful artwork will have special appeal to young readers and will help them develop a thorough grounding in these fundamentals. The knowledge, technical skills and attitude required to become a safe climber are clearly described whilst still conveying the fun and excitement of this challenging sport. Climbing develops fitness, movement skills, teamwork, and determination and this lively book is sure to enthuse many budding young climbers on their way.”

- Guy Jarvis, NICAS Chair

The book has lots of little features like the fold out cover with a try-at-home section of cord and harness to practice your knot on. It also has a flick-book movie in the bottom corner showing the correct belay technique. All these features make it an appealing product for children just starting out to climb. By using the book they can develop good and safe technique, whilst enjoying and getting enthused about their climbing.

The following updates have been sent in by Stu J – many thanks. We have checked them against our current notes based on the work we are doing for the new guide but they haven’t been checked on the ground.

Sax – Penas del Rey
Same description as book until 1.8km but stay on the tarmac road, follow this road past the old bridge (now blocked off), until you go over a new bridge. Then over the new railway, turn immediately left (virtually back on yourself) onto a dirt track and follow this to rejoin the old track. Drive towards the crag, there is parking for a few cars at a wide junction, or continue to parking under the crag – the track is is quite bad. If you carry straight on at the junction you would get to Sector Cumbre.

Echo Valley
Polop is not signed from the N332 but the CV70 is the road that goes past the entrance to Terra Mitica. Follow this road towards Polop until you get to a roundabout that is a water feature. It has some strange sculptures in it, also there is a very obvious ‘tangerine’ petrol station on the far left of the roundabout which you will pass when you follow the sign for Guadalest. Its quite easy to miss the sign post. Polop Paradis does not have a sign for it, just look for the ugly white houses on the side of the road.

Sierra De Toix
The road that leaves Maryvilla for Toix TV is currently blocked by fallen rocks. Walk in from Toix Oeste.

L’Ocaive
The 7km post is a bit faded, looks like a trig point, but its also very obvious your there.

Bellùs (as reported the other day)
When following the CV 60 west from Gandia, the junction used to access Bellus is No 7 and is signed Montaverner and Alfarrasi. This is 30 km from the outskirts of Gandia. Take the A340 through Alfarrasi and on to Bellus.

We have been sent a report that there has been a big rockfall in the Cirque dse Vases area of the Jonte. All the paths in that area are closed until it has been cleaned up by the local CAF. None of the routes have been affected but the paths below the crag have destroyed. Climbers are requested to keep away for the time being but the local CAF do anticipate that the crag will be fully open again when the warmer weather arrives.

The routes affected are from 2) Biotone on page 148 to 11) Une belle dans la tete on page 153 in the new Rockfax guide.

When following the CV 60 west from Gandia the junction used to access Bellus is No 7 and is signed Montaverner and Alfarrasi. This is 30 km from the outskirts of Gandia. Take the A340 through Alfarrasi and on to Bellus.

Work on the 2012 Dorset Rockfax is now moving on rapidly towards the finishing post with the printers ready for the document at the end January (estimated publication date 20/21 February, pre-order offer from 1 February).

The book will be the largest Rockfax ever with the route count up from 1616 in the 2005 guidebook to 2075 at the last count (we just added a route which was completed on 14th January so if you have a new route to finish try and do it within the next 4 days). Portland alone has expanded its repertoire by 274 routes an amazing increase of almost 30% in the last 6 years.

Much has been going on down at both Portland and at Swanage with Dorset’s hardest line being climbed at Blackers Hole ushering in the 8c grade to Dorset and a bountiful haul of new sport routes both at the established cliffs on Portland and on a good number of new venues. The new Rockfax is in full colour with all new action pictures and increased coverage of the trad climbing at Swanage such as Unknown and Flake Ledge.
