Obviously any trip to El Chorro is going to be great but staying at the Olive Branch makes it fantastic. The Nottingham University Climbing Club has been using the OB for a few years now and they have consistently given us exactly what we’ve needed.

This year we took 32 members out to Malaga and we had arranged a pick up from the airport for only 12.50 euros so we were in Chorro within an hour of landing. We had a couple of rooms, the bunkhouse and 10 members camping. The rooms were newly decorated and the tents all had mattresses so we could all recover from the climbing in comfort.

Our club usually cooks for ourselves but we were persuaded to take advantage of the food cooked in house. God it was good! The meals catered for our veggies, vegans and meat eaters. They were absolutely delicious and at breakfast, lunch and dinner for 10 euros a day we were blown away.

The new sectors opened near the Olive Branch provided some fantastic climbs so many thanks to the El Chorro Bolt Fund. (They are also close enough to get a lunch time swim in when it gets a bit too hot.)

Again massive thanks to Mel and Gary for making everything so easy for us, the cooks for the incredible food and the El Chorro Bolt Fund for their work. The week was amazing as were the Olive Branch team.

Our family has just returned from a terrific week staying at The Olive Branch in El Chorro. Whilst we are not (yet) climbers, all four of our daughters and my wife climbed 3 or more climbs which were superbly set up by the very qualified and expert climbing instructor Tom. In August as it is so very hot 35-42C we climbed in the evening or on a North face in the morning. The scenery is stunning and quite like a mini grand canyon. We tucked into a daily breakfast of just about all options so everyone could eat a lot of something they liked and then got ready for fun! The shared kitchen & dining area is very clean and well equipped and Mel, Gary and their team really (including top chef Roy) do make it a very warm and friendly experience. Dining is optional and when we did it was delicious. There are many activities in the area including beautiful lakes for swimming, kayaking etc and horse riding; in addition there is mountain biking, paragliding, quad biking near by. You can fly to Malaga (or Seville) and either rent a car or take the cheap but very modern train to El Chorro station- So this area and B&B are not just for climbing, it was a really great family holiday for sun, swimming and a wide choice of activities and very good value too. Our kids ranged between 8 and 17. Go there!

We’ve stayed at the Olive Branch in El Chorro for the past two years and are returning for a third visit in a months time. The Olive Branch offers a mix of bunk rooms and en-suite as well as accomodating campers. The communal kitchens and dining areas create a relaxed, comfortable environment – perfect for unwinding after a day on the rock and sharing experiences with other like minded guests, or finding your own space to reflect on a failed onsite / rehearse a redpoint for the next day.
Location wise, the Olive Branch could not be better placed – minutes drive from the majority of the Crags on offer at El Chorro and walking distance from a couple.
Thanks to Mel and Gary for providing such a great base from which to explore El Chorro.

I have just got back from El chorro, a seemingly endless expanse of rock boasting some of the greatest sport climbing in the world. I have taken many trips abroad in the pursuit of wonderful bolted rock, El Chorro blew them away. My trip was made even more fantastic due to staying at the Olive Branch. Mel and Gary the owners couldn’t have been more hospitable. They offer taxi drives from the airports and trainstations, they have all the facilities you need to relax at the end of a hard day pulling down on rock, swimming pool, pool table, darts ect and the sense of community there was something I had never experienced on my trips before. Climbers from all over the world sharing their passion. If you are looking for winter sun and climbing you need not look any further.
