GRANDE GROTTA AREA

The Grande Grotta is one of the major showcase crags of Kalymnos and a must-visit venue, if only to gaze at the incredible forest of stalactites hanging from the roof of the cave. The cave itself has a fair share of classic ticks, including some of the most photogenic routes anywhere, but for most climbers the adjacent walls of Panorama have even more to offer. Here the tufas are slightly less steep, offering amazing climbing from the mid-grades upwards. The popularity of the climbs has taken a toll however. Many of the better-known routes are quite polished and some huge ancient stalactites have been knocked off, including the famous tufa trunk on the route Trella. It is worth keeping this in mind if up here - never hang around under climbers when they are on steep tufa-covered ground as these rock missiles will kill if they hit you.
