AUSTRALIA

Australia is the largest single working in the Dinorwig Quarries consisting of a vast open cwm high on the side of Elidir Fawr. The quarrymen thoughtfully developed the area in tiers giving walls of around 30m in height and allowing relatively easy access to the various sections along terraces. Most of the best walls are on the west side where there are around six or seven tiers of quality walls and slabs. The north side and east walls have less to offer but still feature the odd decent bit of rock.
In the late noughties this area saw a boom in easy sport climbing. The Sidings is one of the best areas in the quarries for low-grade clip-ups, although there are many other routes in this area that cover the full spectrum of the slate experience. Australia has become a really popular place to sport climb, although there are some excellent trad lines to be found as well, and some that blur the lines between the two. The nature of the walls on the western side means that it is possible to climb routes on successive tiers creating some enjoyable long link-ups - see p.ยงยงยง.
