CINQUE TORRI

Many of the trenches around the Cinque Torri area have been restored to create an open-air war museum. There are numerous information boards which describe the circumstances and living conditions of the troops who were stationed around the towers during the First World War. The Cinque Torri (five towers), perched high on the Falzarego Pass above Cortina, are one of the cornerstones of climbing in this region. The infinite variety of shapes and sizes found within the many towers epitomise Dolomites climbing in all its forms and the Cinque Torri have always been regarded by locals as the ultimate training facility for alpinists and sport climbers alike. This eclectic mix of climbing ensures that there is something suitable for everyone, with grades ranging from 3 to 8b, and from IV to VIII+, encompassing a wide range of climbing styles. It is here the old hands start the season and the visitors acclimatise themselves before venturing out to take on the imposing vertical walls in the nearby area. Alternatively, before reaching the chairlift car park, there is an access track which can be used to drive to the towers. Turn off at a 112km milestone following signs for 'Rifugio Cinque Torri'. Follow this track steeply for 3km and park just before the rifugio. The towers are clearly visible from the parking area. This access road is a steep single-lane road with infrequent passing places and limited parking at the top, so an early start is essential. Additionally, this track is closed between 9:30 and 15:30 during August (and at other periods during the season) and a shuttle bus service runs (most of the time) during these hours.
