How do you view open street/bike maps offline? Thankfully I roughly remembered the route but a map would have been handy.
Is an app required? If so, what do you recommend.
Sorry, lots of questions. Thanks for any tips.
Had a great afternoon going up to Loch Humphrey and descending an easy MTB route on my commuter bike complete with mudguards, lights, reflectors, slick/worn tyres and pannier to carry a nice flask of coffee. Yes, I'm old.
One thing to bear in mind with OSM is that it's not really a 'map' - strictly speaking it's a database of geographical features. It's up to some 'back-end renderer' code to actually read the database, filter what it's actually interested in, and then draw a map anyway it thinks is appropriate. Different 'OSM apps' will have different renderers with different filtering criteria and drawing modes (colours etc). Some will give you lots of control over the rendering (OSMAnd, LocusMaps), some none at all (Komoot). So if one OSM app doesn't give you want you want, don't assume it's a deficiency of OSM, try another app - the output may be quite different.
With the OSMand app, contours are a separate file to download.
I went for a one-off payment to get access to all maps for download (updates once a month), rather than restricted (free option) to limited number of downloads at any one time or a monthly subscription basis (pretty pointless for most people?).
> It Cache's OSM for free and has a choice of renders for it. I like the https://www.4umaps.com/ render as it is high contract for use outside.
I use LM (preferred option for turn-by-turn navigation) plus https://www.openandromaps.org/en for the rendering (has a link for simple download & install into LM).
