Hi,

Staying for 5 days in Ullapool as a walking base, and looking for recommendations for must do walks in the area with the other half, please. We're happy doing well over 20mile + with plenty climbing but she's not too struck on exposed scrambles, e.g I was in the box room for taking her up Crib Gogh, but she was kind of ok Striding Edge were she could bail out on the ridge and take the lower path.

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Suilven

Either the out-and-back from Glencanisp Lodge or the linear route from Inverkirkaig over Suilven to Glencanisp Lodge if you can arrange the transport.

Peet's is a great place to eat, though you'd probably need to book.

And the quirky trails round Culag Woods on the edge of the village are super for a gentle bimble.

Lochinver Larder for the best pies on the planet, and the morning bacon butties are pretty good too.

Agree with Suilven above it’s pretty spectacular, if a bit busy, though that’s by NW standards.

The three corbett summits of Quinag is a good walk (WalkHighlands has the standard route) or you can work out shorter combinations

lots of shorter options too- the bone caves at inchnadamph, corrieshalloch gorge, Ullapool hill, old man of storr…too many choices really!

and of course Some of the standard munro routes nearby:

Any combinations of some of the Fannichs are good - Sgurr Mor is particularly nice though I like all of that area.

the four hills including Beinn Dearg from inverlael

There is so much good walking in the area, it is hard to choose!

Suilven is a fine peak, though the walk in and out takes longer than the actual climb if not doing the eastern tops (which have some tricky exposed scrambling).  Personally, I prefer Quinag, Cul Mor and the round of Beinn Mor Coigach from Culnacraig (do all 7 tops for maximum enjoyment: any scrambling is readily avoidable), but all the Assynt/Coigach peaks are very worthwhile.

An Teallach is a very fine mountain - the full traverse has some hard scrambling, but this can be avoided, or you can get to both main summits as a out-and-back from Dundonnell.

Worth considering a route in the Fannaichs - there are 3 popular circuits, all good, though the scenery is perhaps less special than the west coast hills.

Lots of good stuff mantioned. How about Ben Mor Coigach from Achiltibuie

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Stac Pollaidh, possibly the cutest mountain in the country. The final summit ridge is exposed, so your other half may take exception to that, but even without touching the very top, it's a very decent wee hill. It is only little, so is suitable for a half-day or evening excursion.

In reply to Matty_W:

From Ullapool you've got some of the best walks and hills in the UK on the doorstep. Probably worth a quick search on the UKH route cards: https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/find.php

(as yet not comprehensive for that area, but we're working on it)

Great options within around 30mins drive would include:

Ben More Coigach via the Postie's Path https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=466

Stac Pollaidh (proper scrambling required for the high point, but not for the slightly lower east top, which is totally worthwhile itself) https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=87

Conival and Ben More Assynt https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1367

Quinag https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=480

Glas Bheinn and the UK's highest waterfall https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1436

Beinn Dearg NW ridge https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1418

Beinn Dearg & Cona' Mheall https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1357

Central Fannaichs https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1352

Western Fannaichs https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1414

Fisherfield Six https://www.ukhillwalking.com/logbook/r/?i=1329

And of course An Teallach, the greatest mountain in Scotland (arguably). If significant scrambling is off the cards then just do the 2 Munros and not the Corrag Bhuidhe pinnacles

Enjoy!

We were up there in February and did An Teallach, the Beinn Dearg group and the Coigach/Fiddler horseshoe thing. All top days out. If your other half doesn't like exposure then Lord Berkley's Seat is definitely one to avoid.

Another for An Teallach from Dundonnell. Very easy to avoid the scrambling if that's what you want to do and and still have an amazing day out despite what walk reports/Walkhighlands might have you believe.

Minimal driving -

1) park at Blughsary and head up Beinn Mor Coigach (+/- return by Postman's Path).

https://kinleyhazel.wordpress.com/2021/09/13/blughasary-approach-to-beinn-m...

2) 3 (or more) of the Beinn Dearg Munros - but well worth using the NW ridge of Beinn Dearg.

https://kinleyhazel.wordpress.com/2016/12/04/ullapool-dearg-group-3-of-5-in...

A bit more driving -

Sail Mhor and the An Teallach Munros

https://kinleyhazel.wordpress.com/2012/08/04/sail-mhor-and-an-teallach-augu...

or about a thousand other walks.

If you want a shorter one: Stac Pollaidh

Suillven from Lochinver (this walk staying 1 overnight at https://www.mountainbothies.org.uk/bothies/northern-highlands/suileag/ was one of my favourite walks as a kid, memories!!)

or Suillven / Canisp from Ledmore

Ben More Assynt if you want a bigger day

So much to chose from there. But take a midge headnet

Better than Tryfan in terms of shapelyness, but we're supposed to keep little  gems like that quiet aren't we. Let's not mention it again and hope nobody read it

In reply to CantClimbTom:

If stac pollaidh referred to think it’s probably one of the most popular hills in Scotland, certainly the most popular north of Inverness.

In reply to J72:

Maybe, but not so well known by the English

job done! Nobody's heard of it

Thank you everyone all for taking the time to reply, plenty to ponder there. Want to do An Teallach, and if we can dodge the worst of the scrambling then sounds like I won’t be in the dog house with the Mrs.
