Took a walk around the Ythan estuary today. Lots to see, including a small flock of wigeon. These were close by and have a similar white flash along the body, but they have yellow bums and seem to lack the forehead stripe. Any ideas folks? (Usual apologies for poor photo, I’ve tried to boost the settings to show the key features.)

Teal?

Yup, teal. And if that white stripe is more vertical horizontal - a rare green winged teal.
Edir: think there’s also a redshank and a turnstone in that photo.

Thanks both. I had considered teal but couldn’t get a match. I now realise I was looking at photos of the American version. Every day’s a school day.

Lots more redshank and turnstones nearby. Also eider, oystercatchers and this…

Any clue as to what it is?

I’m going for dead minke whale, young one. Or Donald Trumps wig.

Aren't they one and the same?

OP JCurrie 22 Jan 2024

It is, or indeed was, a minke. There was a ranger on duty when we got back to the car park. It washed up 14 weeks ago and the intention is to leave it as it is. I reckon that when the weather warms up they might have other ideas.

Edit: the minke washed up 14 weeks ago, not the ranger
